The bad deals you don’t do are silent, but the bad ones you do do scream loud enough for everyone to hear.
There’s more at stake to hiring the wrong executive than simply having to pay them off and start all over again. In thirty years, my experience shows that most hiring managers don’t stop to consider the danger lurking below the surface of a new hire beyond the financial considerations.
There are two main reasons you need to check references:
- 1st: Can they do the job? You have to make sure the “star candidate” really can do the job.
- References can help you determine if the impression you have about the candidates ability to do the job are indeed correct OR not; and
- 2nd: Are they who they claim? Protect your employees, customers and yourself from possible physical harm and/or a negligent hiring suit.
